This year's ARD Music Competition has come to an end. Between September 3 and 21, 2018, the jury selected the best musicians in the subjects Vocals, Trumpet, Viola, and Piano Trio. In addition to the four first and second prize winners and the five third prizes, there are numerous special prizes and scholarships. These include the GENUIN Special Prize, which this year goes to Diyang Mei, the first prize winner in the viola category – personally selected by the GENUIN sound engineers. The young violist will receive support for a CD production, which is expected to be released by GENUIN classics in autumn 2019.
A promising artist
Born in China in 1994, Diyang Mei began studying violin at the age of five. Starting in 2005, he attended the school affiliated with the Central Conservatory of Music, where he majored in viola in Shaowu Wang's class. He has received several scholarships and won numerous international prizes, including most recently first prize at the Gasteig Music Competition in Munich in 2015 and first prize and the audience prize at the 2018 ARD Music Competition.
Diyang Mei has played with numerous symphony orchestras and attended master classes with, among others, Hariolf Schlichtig, Matthias Buchholz, Pinchas Zukerman, Nobuko Imai, Roberto Diaz, and Günter Pichler.
