Irmela Roelcke combines performing with teaching and practical music-making with reflection and music education, developing innovative ideas and dramatically-conceived programs in the process.
One of the focuses of her work is rediscovering and presenting rarely-performed or forgotten piano pieces and chamber music with piano. For example, she released a CD that featured the world’s first recording of Artur Schnabel’s monumental Piano Quintet.
Roelcke is committed to contemporary music and has performed works for multiple pianos, including John McGuire’s Frieze, Clarence Barlow’s Çoğluotobüsişletmesi, and Stefan Wolpe’s Enactments. She was part of the ensemble of pianists who premiered Mathias Spahlinger’s farben der frühe for seven pianos.
In addition, Roelcke devotes herself to historical keyboard instruments, playing the forte-piano, harpsichord, and clavichord. She has performed original compositions and arrangements in unusual musical formations, including with the arpeggione, cimbalom, and psaltery.
She has initiated a number of different projects with musicians of the Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble SurPlus, Staatskapelle Berlin, German Film Orchestra Babelsberg, and Dessau Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra as well as with the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo, her piano duo partner Axel Gremmelspacher, cellist Gerhart Darmstadt, and the Pellegrini and Bennewitz string quartets.
Her artistic work has been featured on numerous CDs and radio broadcasts. Roelcke runs her own private piano studio in Berlin and works at the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf Music School, where she prepares students for university studies. In addition, she is frequently invited to teach at the music universities in Berlin (Hanns Eisler and University of the Arts), Frankfurt am Main, Hanover, Lucerne, and Saarbrücken.
